Increasing the pasture quality is an important component of the three-year watershed management project in Banswara ADP.

Consultation with villagers is vital to the project.
An in-depth analysis has been done of the various grasses and fodder species grown in the 11 villages of the project. In consultation with the villagers, the most suitable grasses have been chosen for planting, based on nutrient content and palatability.

Drought resistant grass seed will be ‘broadcast’ (scattered) over 69 hectares of hilly and forested land where crop cultivation is not possible. The common land will be protected through a concept known as ‘social fencing’ in which user groups decide the pattern of sharing.

The agreement could include stipulations such as keeping animals off the pastureland, and cutting grass to an amount decided by the Village Development Committee and only from designated areas. This helps maintain a consistent and sustained amount of fodder grass for animal consumption.

World Vision will also plant fruit saplings and construct boulder fences and cattle trenches on 50 hectares, to prevent animals destroying the pastureland. The remaining 19 hectares have natural protection. The fruit trees will eventually add to the villagers’ income.
