Since October 2004, Banswara Area Development Programme (ADP) has:

Check dams store monsoon rainwater to be
used throughout the year.
Health and sanitation
  • Registered 144 newborns for birth certificates
  • Immunised 1,624 children and 599 pregnant women, and provided polio drops for 10,751 children
  • Organised puppet shows promoting breast-feeding in 15 communities
  • Provided members of 25 communities with oral rehydration salts for the management of diarrhoea
  • Constructed 39 sanitary toilets
Education
  • Trained 1,196 adults to read and write through four literacy centres
  • Supported one teenager to attend a computing course to gain employment skills
Infrastructure
  • Constructed sturdy homes for nine families
  • Motivated and enabled the community to access government funding and local labour to construct 11 check dams to store rainwater
  • Constructed three new wells and installed seven hand pumps to provide safe drinking water
Agriculture
  • Distributed vegetable seeds to 3,800 families
Community leadership
  • Formed a number of community-based organisations, including three youth groups, six ‘Mahila Mandal’ (women’s groups common across India) and seven self-help groups
  • Registered 16 existing community-based organisations with the government so they can gain access to government resources and funding
  • Organised a youth camp for 35 young people and a children’s camp for 150 children
