Empowering women
In Banswara Area Development Programme (ADP), as in much of India, there are huge issues of gender inequality to overcome. Because of this World Vision, has built a special gender focus into its work.

Women's groups empower women to have their say in the community
|
Traditionally, girls often miss out on education and can be forced to marry at an early age. Discrimination continues throughout their adult lives and many women are powerless to make decisions about their families, homes and communities.
The gender project in Banswara ADP has been working to empower women, increase their decision-making skills and promote gender issues within the whole community – including the men.
As a result there have been some exciting changes in values among community members. Women have started giving their point of view on household decisions and taking initiatives in all spheres of daily life.
Although these are small steps, they have resulted in measurable changes in children’s, and especially girls’, education. The number of children who go without formal education has significantly decreased. When the project began in 1997 only 12 per cent of girls reached secondary school. By 2004 this had grown to more than 50 per cent.
