Achievements
Since October 2006, Gajapati ADP has:

Health and sanitation

  • Educated parents about the importance of immunising their children
  • Held 25 meetings to educate mothers about nutrition, and provided vitamin A supplements for 500 children
  • Held health workshops for 50 teenage girls
  • Educated 1200 families about HIV and AIDS
  • Held 45 information sessions about diarrhoea, malaria and tuberculosis
  • Provided 3300 insecticide-treated mosquito nets
  • Assisted 142 families to construct sanitary toilets
  • Constructed 18 water tanks and provided 42,500 metres of pipe to supply water to 13 villages, benefiting 840 families

Education

  • Formed seven Child Protection Committees
  • Educated more than 100 parents about the importance of education
  • Established the first school playground in the area, encouraging recreation at school and therefore increasing school attendance
  • Subsidised solar lighting in 11 villages, allowing students to study in the evening
  • Provided school uniforms for 3500 children
  • Provided bicycles for 116 students who live long distances from schools
  • Assisted seven remote communities to establish non-formal schools for their children, which more than 550 children now attend

Economic development

  • Assisted 228 families to establish 106 income-generating activities, such as grocery shops, tailoring and dairy farming
  • Constructed four village ponds for fish farming and irrigation
  • Constructed two dams to collect monsoon rainwater for irrigation and fish farming
  • Provided mango and banana plants for 1125 families, to provide fruit and help to reforest the area

The people of Gajapati still have a number of challenges ahead of them. During the next year, World Vision will focus on improving education and healthcare for children, and establishing self-help groups and income-generating activities to improve families’ abilities to sustain themselves.
