Visiting Mporokoso Julia Shortt, direct marketing manager for World Vision New Zealand, visited Zambia earlier this year. She tells of her time in Mporokoso, the community featured in recent World Vision television advertising.
“I had a wonderful opportunity to meet many different people, gain some understanding of the needs and early achievements of Mporokoso and get a feel for the work that is done in the life of an Area Development Programme (ADP). “One of the things that struck me from the first day was how involved all of the villagers are in the development process. At Kambobe Basic School, parents were making mud bricks, stacking and storing them for when they would be needed. They explained that they want to build teacher housing near the school, so this is their contribution to the process. In another area, parents had built boarding houses close to the local school so younger children wouldn’t be so tired from walking long distances to school each day. “I met a number of amazing children, each with their own story to tell. Children around the world are the same in so many ways, but their lives can also be very different. One I met was a young boy named Jonas. He is 10 years old and lives with his mother, brother and sister. His father has died and his mother struggles to give her children even one meal a day. Jonas has asthma but cannot afford regular medication. The local hospital sometimes has enough to give him, but not always. However with World Vision’s help, Jonas’ mother will be able to give her children more nutritious and regular meals. Jonas will have more access to the medication he needs and will also be able to enjoy the most basic things like having books and a uniform so he fits in with the other children at school. “This was my first opportunity to see a World Vision ADP up close, and it encouraged me so much to see how, even at this early stage in the development work, things are being put in place that will last far beyond World Vision’s involvement in the area.” |
